Introduction

On September 5th, 2003 I crossed the threshold in to the building that would essentially dictate the rest of my life. For three years I was an average student getting B's with an occasional C in math. Numbers never have been, and never will be, associated with the name Kevin Phelan. From the first day of freshman year until the present I have been in love with the English language. No matter if it is prose or poetry writing is my passion. However, I do prefer poetry to prose for the simple fact that poetry has a much more heightened sense of emotion and freedom. Prose, for me, is a little too structured and rigid. But when it comes down to school or friend, like any student, I would choose friends.

My friends and I, luckily, all share the same interests. We all played soccer together for ten years, we played Ultimate together for two years, and four of us started a band. Ever since I was in second grade I have been playing soccer for my town as well as my school. In addition to soccer, starting junior year, I started playing Ultimate (frisbee) and fell in love with that as well. Unfortunately, during the County Tournament soccer game this past season I sustained my fifth major concussion and was forced to leave the soccer team. As a result of my injury I am no longer allowed to participate in any contact sports for the rest of my life. This restriction includes soccer and ultimate, the only two sports I play. Also, if I sustain one more concussion, major or minor, I am guaranteed brain damage and there is a chance I could die. So, in school and in my free time, writing is my new hobby. I feel pretty lucky considering what the repercussions could have been, and I am grateful that I am still able to write.
